Kids & Dogs!

See this very cute dog.

His name is Odie and he's a Jack Russell Terrier.  We adopted him about 5 years ago from a neighbor when one of her daughters developed a severe allergic reaction to him.

Late last night he was whining and whining at the back door.  I figured he had to go to the bathroom one last time.

Bad bad mistake.

He's out there running around like somebody left the gate ooooooooooooooopen..

(sorry for the ear worm)

when suddenly the house STINKS.  It has been in the 90's here for 3 or 4 days so the central AC unit has basically been running non stop. I thought for sure it blew a gasket or something. It smelled like burning rubber.

I open the back door, convinced I'm going to see smoking coming from the unit.

No smoke, instead I get a face full of skunk smell.

And Odie is behind the shed barking his fool head off.

Shit.

My 14 yo son & I go out to check (husband is at work) and we run away screaming like little girls when we see the skunk he's got cornered.

Now it's a RECON mission.

Son goes to grab his Airsoft gun and I grab flashlights and Odie's leash.

By the time we get to them, Odie has chased the skunk out of the yard.

Son leashed Odie and we bring him back towards the house.  There is NO way he's coming back inside so I do a quick Google search and learn that skunk spray is an oil.

Ok what gets rid of oil?  Dish soap.  So I find a recipe that mixes dish soap, peroxide & baking soda and soak him in it.

Then a bath with dog shampoo
then Listerine (internet suggestion)
and another dog shampoo.

I think we got it.

But the house stinks. I text with neighbor because the skunk went in her yard & she has a dog.  She tells me her house stinks too!

Husband comes home from work (and getting tomato juice) and says you can smell it down the street!

I give him some calming meds (it's a doggie kind) and put him in his crate for the night.

This morning everything smells a little better. I have several candles burning to help in the house.

Odie doesn't smell on his body, but his face STINKS.

He's getting shaved today (needed before the skunk incident)

And we're going to have to see what I can safely do to his face to get rid of the smell a little more.

Fun times, fun times!

Update 7/1
Odie has been bathed a few times and got a hair cut.

He still stinks when he's wet, but otherwise it's not too bad.  My friend brought me some cinnamon sticks to simmer in water (i used the crock pot) and the house smells fine.

The incident happened behind the shed, so that area still needs to be addressed.

In my humble opinion, I think the dish soap/peroxide/baking soda bath was the most effective.  Just make sure it doesn't get in their eyes.

August 26th National Dog Day!

My goal in life is to be as good of a person my dog already thinks I am.  ~Author Unknown

Yeah for Doggies!

Those pooches are my puppies, Becca & Odie.

Becca came to us through a rescue group. I was only supposed to foster her, but we fell in love with her pretty much instantly.  She is one of the best dogs ever, but don't touch her tail, she doesn't like that! LOL

Odie is our Jack Russell that came to us when a neighbors daughter developed an allergy to him.  I swear he's part cat.  Becca will do anything to please us, Odie acts like a prince and is aloof like a cat.

But the are both pretty awesome!

And speaking of awesome, have you see my

My Doggies!

I love dogs.  Much like kids, if I could, I'd have a whole ton of dogs!  But we only have 2

Becca is a Border Collie Sheltie mix that we have decided is the designer breed "Beltie."  She seriously is THE BEST DOG ever.

We originally were just going to foster her, as we had been doing that for a few months, but I knew immediately she was in her forever home.

While it's always sad when someone has to give up their dog, I'm grateful to the people who gave her up.  She is the epitome of finding a needle in a haystack.
But be warned, she is VERY protective of us.  I believe she would jump in front of a bullet for any of us.

We were quite happy being a one dog family.

Then one night we're watching tv and thejerseyshoredad sees a border collie playing with a Jack Russell Terrier.   He was totally in love.

Let me take a step back here.  I am the one who grew up having dogs.  thejerseyshoredad only ever had cats.  Oh and I only ever had medium to large Collies.  My sister in law had a little mini poodle when she & my brother married.  He was cute, but OMG little dogs are annoying.

I didn't really put any stock into actually getting Jack Russell.

But then one day my neighbor-friend Millie said to me
"We probably have to get rid of Odie, one of the girls is allergic to him"

Odie is a Jack Russell.

All of the sudden I hear the words "I'll take him" come out of my mouth

(very edited picture, if he wasn't on a leash he'd be swimming to Europe!)

Not exactly sure how it happened, but I said it and a few days later he moved in.

It was hard at first.  The little shit thought he was in charge.  We quickly changed that and Becca helped a LOT too. He had to be taught to not run out the front door.  And he still has to be leashed in the backyard because he's part hamster and tries to dig out.
However, he's a mush. I wake up with him sleeping at ON my feet.

I have to laugh at the differences between the two.

Becca lives to make us happy.

Odie couldn't care less what we do unless it is to serve him or his needs in anyway.

But they play nice together (most of the time)
and they don't fight (for real)
(i LOVE this picture, Becca looks SO mean and she's a big pushover)

And they complete our family.

Do you have any dogs?
